Sam Houston Jones State Park
Location:12 miles north of Lake Charles off LA 378 in Calcasieu Parish.
Facilities:20 premium campsites (full hookups, including sewer), 42 improved
campsites, 19 improved tent-only campsites, comfort stations, 12 cabins
(2 @di), picnic area, group shelter, playground, hiking trails, 2 boat
launches, boat rentals.
Activities:Camping, boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking, bird watching, interpretive programs.
Special Features:Park's caretakers have worked to keep the land in its natural state,
with tree-filled lagoons and a mixed pine and hardwood forest
environment. The park was originally named for the Texas folk hero but
was later changed to honor the state's 37th governor, who was
instrumental in setting aside this tract of land for public use.
