San Miguel

 

a city in eastern El Salvador, on the Pan American Highway, capital of San Miguel Department. Population, 111,000 (1971). San Miguel is linked by railroad with the port of La Unión. It is the center of an agricultural region producing coffee, cotton, sugarcane, henequen, and grains. There is also stock raising in the area. Textile, food, and leather-producing enterprises are found in San Miguel. Silver is mined near the city.

an active volcano in a volcanic highland in southeastern El Salvador. One of the most active volcanoes in Central America, San Miguel rises to an elevation of 2,129 m. It is noted for its thick base and isolated cone, which towers above the surrounding lowlands. The circumference of the main crater is approximately 3 km. The volcano is more than 150 m deep. Its slopes have many secondary craters and fumaroles.
