Schmidt, Maarten

(1929–  ) astronomer; born in Groningen, Holland. He left the Leiden Observatory (1953–59) for the Hale Observatory and the California Institute of Technology in 1959. He also joined the staff of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (1970–78) and directed the Hale Observatory (1978–80). His research included the cosmic distribution of quasars.
