Schneider, David Murray
(1918– ) cultural anthropologist; born in New York City. He graduated from Cornell (1940) and received a Ph.D. from Harvard (1949). Field trips to Yap Island in the Pacific (1947–48) and among the Mescalero Apache in New Mexico (1955–58) yielded influential studies. He taught at Harvard and Berkeley before becoming professor of anthropology at Chicago in 1960. He is the author of The American Kinship Universe (1975), among other works.
