Serra do Mar

 

a name commonly used to designate the eastern edge of the Brazilian Highlands south of Rio de Janeiro. (The Serra do Mar proper is between 25° and 28°30’ S lat.) There are elevations to 1,889 m. The Serro do Mar, which is an uplifted edge of the crystalline Atlantic shield, falls abruptly to the Atlantic Ocean, giving the eastern slopes the appearance of mountain ranges. Tropical rain forests are common in the region.

A Mata Atlantica e um exemplo dessa situacao, onde restam poucos fragmentos desse importante bioma no Brasil, sendo que um dos principais remanescentes de Mata Atlantica esta localizado na Serra do Mar, na qual foi criado Parque Estadual para proteger esse rico ecossistema.

"Serra dos Orgaos" National Park is a mountainous area in the Southeast of Brazil in the state of Rio de Janeiro, that is, part of the "Serra do Mar" mountain range.
The vicariant events were related to the uplifting of the Serra do Mar and the Serra da Mantiqueira, and the appearance of large rivers and climatic changes.
The overnight journey from the port to Campinas is not an easy one since the 20-car convoy has to climb the 800meter-high Serra do Mar, which protects the coast.
Nessas areas foram criadas Unidades de Conservacao (UCs), como o Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar (PESM), que com 315.390 ha e considerado um dos maiores remanescentes da Floresta Ombrofila Densa Atlantica (RODRIGUES et al., 2008).
