Seyhan

(known as Zamanti in the upper course and Yenice in the middle course), a river in southern Turkey. The name “Seyhan” is applied to the river below the influx of its major left tributary, the Göksu River. The Seyhan is 516 km long and drains an area of 20,700 sq km. It rises on the southern slopes of the Tecer Mountains, then flows in narrow gorges, cutting through the Taurus Mountains and, in its lower course, across the Çukur Ova lowland. It empties into Mersin Bay of the Mediterranean Sea. High water is in the spring, and low water in the summer and fall. The average flow rate at the city of Adana is approximately 200 cu m per sec. A hydroengineering complex, with a dam 57 m high, a reservoir 45 km long, and a hydroelectric power plant, was constructed above Adana in 1945. The Seyhan’s waters are used for irrigation.
