Established: 1907.
Location:Off the south-central Louisiana coast in the Gulf of Mexico, 40 miles south of Lafayette.
Activities:Boating, fishing.
Special Features:Nearly submerged and regularly covered in storm overwash, Shell Keys are eroding away, exposing the state's vulnerable marsh coastline to the damaging effects of the ocean and storms.
Habitats: Small sand spit and shell barrier islands.
Access: Restricted, due to its remoteness.
Wild life: Black skimmers, laughing gulls, white and brown pelicans, royal and sandwich terns.
