Shmidt Island

Shmidt Island
the northwesternmost island in the Severnaia Zemlia archipelago, in the Kara Sea. Part of Krasnoiarsk Krai, RSFSR, Shmidt Island has an area of 430 sq km and rises to an elevation of 325 m. It is almost entirely covered by glacial ice, with outcrops of rock only at the shore. The island was discovered in 1930 by an expedition led by O. Iu. Shmidt aboard the steamship Georgii Sedov.
