Singapore Strait

 

a strait situated between the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and Singapore Island in the north and the Riau Archipelago in the south; it connects the South China Sea with the Strait of Malacca. The Singapore Strait is 110 km long and 4.6 to 21 km wide. Its maximum depth is 22 m. A sea route passes through the strait connecting ports between South and East Asia, South Asian ports with those of America and Australia, and East Asian ports with those of Europe and Africa. The city and port of Singapore is situated on Singapore Island. [23–1228–]

The collision happened when the John S McCain, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer with a crew of 280, homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, and the Alnic MC, a Liberian-flagged chemical tanker carrying a partial load of cargo with a crew of 24, were transiting towards Singapore in the westbound lane of the Singapore Strait Traffic Separation Scheme.
