Smale, Stephen
(1930– ) mathematician; born in Flint, Mich. This National Academy of Sciences member contributed largely to topology with his h-cobordism theorem. This work won him the Fields Medal (1966). As a professor at the University of California: Berkeley (1960), his research spanned from n-dimensional geometry to applied science.
