The operation of a circuit or device with unused portions of the circuit disconnected to reduce power consumption.

standby mode

One of the several operating modes for equipment. The equipment is warmed up and ready to go into operation as soon as it is selected onto the operating mode. This term normally is used for radar operations and in some avionics.

sleep mode

A low power mode in a computer. Also called "standby mode," the screen and hard disks are turned off, but the memory (RAM) chips are continually refreshed in order to retain their contents. In addition, the CPU is throttled down to its lowest power state. The computer is immediately restored for use when the user touches a key or moves the mouse.
