Steam-generating unit

The wide diversity of parts, appurtenances, and functions needed to release and utilize a source of heat for the practical production of steam at pressures to 5000 lb/in.2 (34 megapascals) and temperatures to 1100°F (600°C), often referred to as a steam boiler for brevity. See Steam

The essential steps of the steam-generating process include (1) a furnace for the combustion of fuel, or a nuclear reactor for the release of heat by fission, or a waste heat system; (2) a pressure vessel in which feedwater is raised to the boiling temperature, evaporated into steam, and generally superheated beyond the saturation temperature; and (3) in many modern central station units, a reheat section or sections for resuperheating steam after it has been partially expanded in a turbine. This aggregation of functions requires a wide assortment of components, which may be variously employed in the interests, primarily, of capacity and efficiency in the steam-production process.
