In central MN, northwest of Minneapolis; established Feb 20, 1855 (prior to statehood) from unorganized lands. Name Origin: For Charles Thomas Stearns (1807-98), territorial legislator (1854-55). In the original bill, the county was to be named for Isaac Ingalls Stevens (1818-62), first territorial governor of WA and surveyor for the Northern Pacific Railway, but apparently a clerical error was made and allowed to stand
