Stephen A. Forbes State Park
Location:Southern Illinois, 15 miles northeast of Salem in Marion County.
Facilities:115 campsites with electricity, water, and showers, 10 primitive
walk-in campsites, youth group camping area, group rent-a-camp site
with cabin, 21-site equestrian campground with electricity, picnic
areas, sports field, playground, hiking trails, equestrian trails (15
miles), restaurant, marina, store, boat ramps, boat rentals, docks,
floating walkway (é), swimming beach, aquatic laboratory (open for public tours).
Activities:Camping, boating, canoeing, fishing, swimming, water-skiing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, interpretive programs.
Special Features:Park is named for natural scientist Stephen A. Forbes, whose more than
400 scientific publications are still used extensively in the study of
aquatic biology, ichthyology, ornithology, and ecology. Park has more
than 1,100 acres of oak and hickory forest surrounding a large lake
with 18 miles of shoreline.
