In north-central TX, northeast of Abilene; established as Buchanan County Jan 22, 1858 from Bosque County; organized Sep 20, 1860. Name Origin: For Alexander Hamilton Stephens (1812-83), GA legislator, vice president of the Confederate government (1861), and governor of GA (1882-83)
