stereotomy

The art of cutting solids, e.g. stone, into certain figures or shapes.

At its most basic, the thesis was an objection to the status quo: most discussion, architectural and otherwise, concerning Oceanic buildings had put the primary focus on tectonics (which is to say, timber construction) typified by the fale, rather than masonry tombs, platforms or altars (which Semper terms "stereotomy").
These scorings are the irregular imprints of drills and cutting tools, acquired during the stereotomy process, by which stone is cut and shaped.
