Sterne, Maurice

Sterne, Maurice

(1878–1957) painter; born in Libau, Latvia. He and his widowed mother emigrated to New York City (1889), where he studied under Thomas Eakins at the National Academy of Design (1894–99). Although he often traveled, he remained based in New York. He is best known for his landscapes, influenced by Gaugin and Cézanne.
