The Uni Stuttgart team already had a good
stub axle design that was produced by precision casting.
To transport the system, he attached the
stub axles and wheels off an old Deere seeder and a junked utility trailer.
It has plenty of tools [24 + 1], and we also have a fourth-axis on it, which we use when we run the machine overnight for making parts like
stub axles. During the day, we use the rest of the bed for other jobs.
In a 4x4 this is done by breaking up the axle into roughly three main parts, the central part containing the differential being fixed to the chassis (and therefore as seen above, becomes a suspended mass) and the two, lighter
stub axles (or half-shafts) driving the wheel hubs via universal and constant-speed joints.
So, I drove back, overalls on, underneath trailer, about two hours later two
stub axles and their wheels removed, and back to the recycle centre.

The differential housing was cut from the Expedition rear axle, modified to accept attachment to constant velocity joints, and mated to
stub axles from the front drive unit of another Expedition.
