Location:Northeastern Minnesota. Accessible by I-35, MN 169, and US 53 and 61. Nearby cities/towns include Duluth, Ely, Grand Marais, and Virginia.

Special Features:Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, a one-million-acre area with 1,500 miles of canoe trails, believed to be the most heavily used wilderness area in America; Superior Hiking Trail, a 205-mile trail that runs along the high ridgeline beside Lake Superior, rated as one of the best in trails in Midwestern America. Northern Minnesota is the last stronghold of the gray wolf in the lower 48 states; approximately 300-400 gray wolves live in the forest.

The BWCAW stretches over more than 1.1 million acres of northern Minnesota's Superior National Forest. The largest wilderness east of the Rocky Mountains, it began in 1938 as the Superior Roadless Primitive Area and is now perhaps the best-known unit in the federal wilderness system.
