Location:Northeastern Minnesota. Accessible by I-35, MN 169, and US 53 and 61. Nearby cities/towns include Duluth, Ely, Grand Marais, and Virginia.
Facilities:39 campgrounds, group camps, dispersed camping, picnic sites, boat launches, trails (400+ miles), scenic drives.
Activities:Camping, hunting, fishing, boating, canoeing, sailing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, rock hounding, blueberry picking, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, snowshoeing, dog sledding.
Special Features:Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, a one-million-acre area with 1,500 miles of canoe trails, believed to be the most heavily used wilderness area in America; Superior Hiking Trail, a 205-mile trail that runs along the high ridgeline beside Lake Superior, rated as one of the best in trails in Midwestern America. Northern Minnesota is the last stronghold of the gray wolf in the lower 48 states; approximately 300-400 gray wolves live in the forest.
