Surra

a parasitic blood disease of horses, cattle, camels, dogs, and elephants that is caused by the trypanosome Trypanosoma evansi. The causative agent is transmitted from an infected animal to a healthy one by bloodsucking insects.

Surra occurs in countries with a tropical climate. The zebu (Bos indicus) is resistant to infection. The incubation period is one to three weeks. In most animals, symptoms include fever, emaciation, pallor of the mucous membranes, and edema. Surra is treated with arsenicals, suramin, and quinapyramine. The disease can be prevented by controlling bloodsucking insects and injecting healthy animals with suramin and quinapyramine.
