Tara

 

a city under oblast jurisdiction and administrative center of Tara Raion, Omsk Oblast, RSFSR. Landing on the left bank of the Irtysh River 410 km below Omsk. Population, 24,000 (1974). Tara manufactures components for agricultural machinery, as well as winnowing machines, wagon-and-cart accessories and other products. It has meat and dairy combines, a flour mill, a fish-processing plant, a brewery, and a brickyard. It also has a footwear factory and a clothing factory. Tara was founded in 1594.


Tara

 

a river in Novosibirsk and Omsk oblasts, RSFSR; a right tributary of the Irtysh River of the Ob’ River basin. The Tara is 806 km long and drains an area of 18,300 sq km. It rises on the Vasiugan’e Plain and meanders through a gently sloping valley. The river is fed mainly by snow. High water occurs from April through June. The mean flow rate 108 km from the mouth is 40.8 cu m per sec. The Tara freezes in late October or November and opens up in late April or early May. In harsh winters the river bars freeze down to the bottom. The river is navigable as far as the village of Kyshtovka, a total distance of 350 km; during high water it is navigable even farther.
