Established: 1967.
Location:On the north shore of Long Island, 25 miles east of New York City.
Facilities:Trails.
Activities:Fishing, hiking.
Special Features:Piping plovers forage on the refuge's beach and least and common terns forage along the shore.
Habitats: 80 acres of upland forest, beach, a brackish pond and several vernal ponds.
Access: Open 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset. During the spring, a segment of the beach is closed to public use to allow bank swallows to nest undisturbed.
Wild life: Owls, osprey, American Kestrel, puddle ducks, black ducks, double-crested cormorants, herons, egrets, sandpipers, plovers, red fox, gray squirrel, eastern chipmunk, eastern cottontail, white-tailed deer, and harbor seals.
