(until 1945, the settlement of Samarkandskii), a city under oblast jurisdiction in Karaganda Oblast, Kazakh SSR. Situated on the Samarkand (Nura) Reservoir. Terminus of a railroad branch from the Solonichki station. Population, 197,000 (1975; 5,000 in 1939 and 77,000 in 1959).
Temirtau is the site of the Karaganda Metallurgical Combine. The settlement also has a district heat and power plant, a plant for the production of synthetic rubber, and a foundry and machine shop. Educational institutions include a factory branch of the Karaganda Metallurgical Combine, mechanochemistry and construction technicums, and medical and music schools.
an urban-type settlement in Kemerovo Oblast, RSFSR, under the jurisdiction of the Tashtagol city soviet. Termirtau is located in Gornaia Shoriia. It has a railroad station (Akhpun) south of Novokuznetsk. Iron ore and dolomite are mined nearby, and there is an ore-crushing and concentration plant in the settlement. Temirtau supplies raw materials to the metallurgical plants of Novokuznetsk.
