Established: 1972.
Location:About 25 miles northeast of Boston: 1 mile off the coast of Massachusetts on the north side of Thacher Island.
Special Features:Thacher Island is home to the Cape Ann Light Station, designated a National Historic Landmark. A unique feature of this site is its twin light towers; the North Tower is located on refuge property.
Habitats: 22 acres of rock edge, grass, and shrub.
Access: Accessible by boat only. Open daily from sunrise to sunset but is subject to temporary closures.
Wild life: Herring and great black-backed gulls, cormorants, common eider, and other waterfowl species.
