Permabit pioneers the development of data reduction software that provides data deduplication, compression, and
thin provisioning. It is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts with operations in California, Texas, Korea and Japan.
One of the major efficiencies was implemented in March 2012 when NMCI initiated a concept called "
thin provisioning." In a thin provisioned storage infrastructure, storage capacity is dynamically allocated as it is used rather than statically allocated in a "thick provisioning" model.
Through
thin provisioning, target deduplication and inline compression, IceWEB's unified storage arrays enable standardization, consolidation and optimized storage utilization for virtual and cloud environments, saving up to 90% of storage costs, while reducing space, power and cooling requirements and simplifying storage management.
The software can also be used in bringing new storage systems on line when older ones are retired, and for
thin provisioning of storage in virtual environments.
Thin provisioning, according to Computerworld, allows an organization to purchase minimal short-term storage capacity and work with vendors to set thresholds that alert them when more is needed.
According to Moody's senior vice president, Richard Lane, while "the acquisition will provide Dell important data storage capabilities such as automated tiering and
thin provisioning, the overall financial impact will be modest since Compellent's revenue is less than 1% the size of Dell".
During the program both Avnet and HP highlighted various techniques that can be used to design an effective storage infrastructure, such as data tiering,
thin provisioning, data de-duplication, archiving and backup strategies to protect precious data.

Automated tiering is fully integrated with other storage system features, including space-efficient snapshots,
thin provisioning and replication.
Other technologies like
thin provisioning and storage virtualization provide greater storage utilization and cost-efficient DR (respectively) are also in high demand.
Both models feature iSCSI Target service with
Thin Provisioning and dual Gigabit LAN ports with port trunking (support 7 bonding modes) and multi-IP setting.
