thin film

[′thin ′film]
(electronics)
A film a few molecules thick deposited on a glass, ceramic, or semiconductor substrate to form a capacitor, resistor, coil, cryotron, or other circuit component.
(materials)
A film of a material from one to several hundred molecules thick deposited on a solid substrate such as glass or ceramic or as a layer on a supporting liquid.

thin film

A microscopically thin layer of material that is deposited onto a metal, ceramic, semiconductor or plastic base. Typically less than one micron thick, thin films can be conductive or dielectric (non-conductive) and are used in myriad applications. For example, the top metallic layer on a chip and the coating on magnetic disks are thin films. Thin films of photovoltaic material using silicon, cadmium telluride and other elements are used to make solar panels and solar roof shingles. See sputtering.

This work was carried out aiming to: (i) assess the determination of oxides (Si[O.sub.2], [Al.sub.2][O.sub.3], [Fe.sup.2][O.sub.3], Ti[O.sub.2] and [P.sub.2][O.sub.5]) in several unknown tropical soils via pXRF compared with the conventional method adopted in Brazil; (ii) under laboratory conditions, assess the pXRF results of packing the soil samples prior to analysis with proper X-ray thin-film and plastic bags; (iii) verify whether the pXRF performance could be influenced by the soil matrix, which was established according to the Munsell system; and (iv) compare the pXRF measurements made on sieved soil samples and directly on the soil profile.
