Tlaxcala

2. a city in E central Mexico, on the central plateau, capital of Tlaxcala state: the church of San Francisco (founded 1521 by Cortés) is the oldest in the Americas. Pop.: 25 000 (1990 est.)

Tlaxcala
a state in Mexico, on the southern Meseta Central. Area, 3,900 sq km. Population, 459,600 (1974). The capital is Tlaxcala. The population engages in subsistence farming of corn and beans. Maguey plantations occupy one-third of the arable land.
