Storm
Trysail Block Island Race Week 21-26 June 2009
Swartz explained that the Storm
Trysail Club (headquartered in New York) and the Transpacific Yacht Club (in Los Angeles) announced in July of 2006 their partnership in developing the STP65 Rule.
The Farr-designed Rosebud was launched in June 2007 as the world's first STP65, a 'box-rule' collaboration between the Storm
Trysail and TransPacific yacht clubs in the USA (see our exclusive feature on the STP65 in the Feb/Mar '08 issue).
Phil has added to the mast, alongside the mainsail track, a separate track for the storm
trysail. He says you can set up the
trysail early, in a turtle at the mast base, sheets on and ready to go, a good idea because when the going gets rough it is hard enough to hang on, let alone change sails.
Through the diligent and difficult work of the Storm
Trysail and Transpac Yacht Clubs, the various designers and the sailing community, a consensus was reached on the STP65 design.
The boards of the TPYC and STC worked with the designers to create the Storm
Trysail Transpac 65 (STP65) box rule.
AFR Midnight Rambler blew out their main but rather than retire, they set a
trysail and struggled to the island.
Overnight Hasta La Vista was dealt a critical blow when they shredded their mainsail and had to spend the next 12 hours sailing with their
trysail.
The Storm
Trysail Red team, made up of 2004 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race winner Aera (Nick Lykiadopulo, UK), Blue Yankee (Bob & Farley Towse, Stamford, Ct) and Googolplex (Colin Reith, New York) finished second.
