Turku-Pori

 

a lääni (province) in southwestern Finland. Area, 23,000 sq km. Population, 693,000 (1974), 57 percent of which is urban. The capital of the lääni is Turku.

In Turku-Pori 40 percent of the labor force works in industry and construction, and 20 percent in agriculture and forestry. Turku-Pori accounts for 20 percent of Finland’s gross industrial output. It is the main shipbuilding region of the country; other types of machine building in Turku-Pori include the production of electrical equipment. Industry is also represented by oil refining, food processing, paper and lumber production, and the manufacture of textiles. The lääni is the main agricultural region of Finland, with meat cattle, dairy cattle, and grain being raised. Turku-Pori also has a fishing industry.
