Established: 1924.
Location:Along 261 miles of the Mississippi River from Wabasha, Minnesota, to Rock Island, Illinois.
Facilities:Visitor center, viewing sites, picnic areas, boat ramps, trails, historic features.
Activities:Boating, canoeing, fishing, ice fishing, hunting, trapping, hiking, camping, educational programs.
Special Features:More than 160 bald eagle nests and a yearly average of 15 active heron colonies with a total of 5,000 nests exist on the refuge. The refuge and river support 119 fish species that support a strong commercial and recreational fishery.
Habitats: 240,000 acres of broad pools, islands, braided channels, extensive bottomland forest, floodplain marshes and occasional sand prairie.
Access: Open 24 hours a day.
Wild life: Tundra swans, canvasbacks, lesser scaup, mallards, wigeon, bald eagles, vireos, and deer.
