VHS ripping
Converting analog VHS tapes to digital video formats such as MPEG-2 and H.264. Unlike CD to MP3 ripping, which is digital-to-digital, VHS ripping performs analog-to-digital conversion and then encodes the converted digital stream into the desired digital format. See cassette ripping and USB turntable.

| ION Audio's VCR 2 PC can be used as a standard VHS player, but it can also convert the analog videotape to digital MPEG-2 and send it to the computer via USB. The software can then burn the MPEG-2 to a DVD or transcode it to H.264 and PSP formats for the iPod and Sony's portable PlayStation. (Image courtesy of ION Audio LLC, www.ionaudio.com) |
