On the central western border of IN, north of Terre Haute; organized Jan 2, 1824 from Parke County. Name Origin: For the Big Vermilllion River, which runs across the northern part of the county. Shortened French literal transliteration Vermillion Jaune 'yellow red' of the Indian name Osanamon, suggesting vermilion paint, probably from the soil that colored the river.
