The presentation summarized the authors' work to preserve the USS Cairo, a recovered Civil War ironclad gunboat on display at the
Vicksburg National Military Park, as well as several timber-covered bridges in Ohio.
Some of the most important attractions in Mississippi are the Mississippi Petrified Forest, Natchez antebellum homes, Natchez Trace Parkway, and
Vicksburg National Military Park. The Mississippi Petrified Forest, near Jackson, is a National Natural Landmark composed of a number of ancient giant stone logs in the only petrified forest in the eastern part of the United States.
Dominating the city's history from a bluff, however, is the
Vicksburg National Military Park. Hundreds of Union and Confederate soldiers, many unknown, who died in the battles and siege of Vicksburg are buried in the park, and all who fought at the site are honored by more than 1,400 monuments, memorials and tablets.
