Visual J++

A Windows-based Java development system from Microsoft. It is used to create Java applications that can run on any platform or to create Windows-specific applications that call ActiveX components or Windows directly. Visual J++ also includes a Java compiler. The upgrade path for Visual J++ is J# for .NET. See J#.

As a demonstration, we have developed a sample Visual J++ (VJ++) application named CustomerDemo to port to .Net.
Progress has been rapid, leading to a shakeout--IBM VisualAge for Java, Microsoft Visual J++, Sybase PowerJ and Symantec Visual Cafe have all vanished from the scene.
Visual J# can also upgrade projects from Visual J++ 6.0 into the Visual Studio '.NET' format.
The JUMP to '.NET' tools will help programmers modify existing applications developed with Visual J++ to work on the '.NET' platform, to interoperate with other programming languages and applications supporting '.NET' and to incorporate new '.NET' functionality.
The two-year competitive grants include the latest technology tools used in the workplace, such as the Visual Basic, Visual C++ and Visual J++ development systems, Office 2000 Developer Edition and the Visual InterDev Web development system, as well as the Windows 98 or 2000 operating systems, if needed.
Microsoft has to replace its proprietary Java "virtual machine" interpreters with a plain-vanilla VM that quite possibly won't run existing applications created by Microsoft's widely- used Visual J++ 6.0 development toolkit (which the judge also ordered Microsoft to revise).
It offers support for COM-based development tools such as: Visual Basic, Powerbuilder, Visual J++ and the LotusScript development language.
