Volkmann’s Canals

 

named after the German scientist A. W. Volkmann (1800–77), passages in the tubular bones of vertebrates, including man, that are radially arranged in relation to the long axis of the bone. The canals contain the vessels that carry blood from the periosteum. Volkmann’s canals pass directly into the haversian canals in compact bone. Unlike the haversian canals, Volkmann’s canals are not surrounded by concentrically arranged lamellae.
