Vorwärts

a German newspaper and principal publication of the Social Democratic Party of Germany from 1876 to 1878 and 1891 to 1933. Vorwärts was originally published in Leipzig and after 1891 was published as a daily in Berlin. While the Exceptional Law Against the Socialists was in effect, from 1878 to 1891, the newspaper was prohibited. Until 1900 it was the main militant publication of the revolutionary proletariat. For many years, W. Liebknecht was editor of the paper. Later, reflecting the evolution of the leadership of the Social Democratic Party, Vorwärts became a tool of opportunist elements. It ceased to exist shortly after the establishment of the fascist dictatorship in Germany.
