Vyshnh Volochek

 

a city in Kalinin Oblast, RSFSR, situated on the Vyshnii Volok Water System and the Moscow-Leningrad highway. The railroad station is 119 km northwest of Kalinin. Population, 74,000 (1970). Vyshnii Volochek is a major center of the textiles industry, with a cotton fabric combine and spinning and weaving and knitted goods mills. It also has machine, glass, woodworking, tanning-extracts, and flax-processing factories; factories that make beds, mirrors and frames, and upright pianos; and a meatpacking combine and a dairy products factory. The city has a textiles technicum, a medical school, a drama theater, and a museum of local lore. Vyshnii Volochek was founded on the portage (in Russian, volok; hence the name of the town) between the Msta and Tvertsa rivers. It has been a city since 1770.
