Location:5 miles from Norfolk, Virginia.
Activities:Hiking, deer hunting (limited).
Special Features:Refuge protects the Simoneston Bay sea-level fen. Sea-level fens are nutrient-poor maritime seepage wetlands, confined to a few sites with an unusual combintion of environmental conditions for the mid-Atlantic. The fen is located just above the highest tide levels, at th base of a slope where abundant groundwater discharges. Only four occurrences are known in Virginia.
Habitats: 373 acres of mostly salt marsh and woodlands. Additional, the Fish & Wildlife Service uses approximately 3,000 acres of NASA-owned land on Wallops Island proper for research and management of declining wildlife.
Access: Closed to the public.
Wild life: Snow geese, black ducks, dunlin, dowitchers, bald eagle, piping plover, Wilson's plover, American oystercatcher, white-tailed deer.
