(Papio papio), a catarrhine monkey having a body length of 65–70 cm and a tail length of 50–55 cm. The coloration of the long, thick hairs is reddish brown. The hairs are especially long in males around the neck, where they form a mantle. The face, ears, hands, and feet are black; the ischial callosities (buttock pads) are bright red. The western baboon is found in Senegal and Guinea. It lives in troops of 20 to 40 individuals. The monkey spends most of its time on the open ground but sleeps in trees. The diet consists of fruits, roots, small animals, and the eggs of birds.
