Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park
Location:At Mile Marker 85.5 on Windley Key near Islamorada.
Facilities:Environmental Education Center with displays and meeting room, restroom facilities, nature trails, picnic tables.
Activities:Hiking, wildlife viewing, guided tours.
Special Features:Formed of Key Largo limestone (fossilized coral), this land was sold to
the Florida East Coast Railroad, which used the stone to to build Henry
Flagler's Overseas Railroad in the early 1900s. After the railroad's
completion, the site was used to quarry a decorative stone called
Keystone. Visitors today can walk along the quarry walls, where they
can see cross sections of the ancient coral and learn about the quarry
and its operation.
