Winter Quarters State Historic Site
Location:8 miles southeast of Newellton on LA 608 in Tensas Parish.
Facilities:Historic home, picnic area, restroom.
Activities:Guided tours, interpretive programs.
Special Features:Spared destruction in 1863 by Union forces following Sherman's orders
to destroy everything not needed by Union troops, Winter Quarters was
the only surviving plantation home out of 15 that lined the banks of
Lake Saint Joseph. The restored house is furnished in the style of the
period and includes a rare and perfectly preserved billiard table made
by the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company around 1845. Other items
housed there include diaries and other personal records that provide a
valuable link to the Antebellum period.
