XPointer

(XML POINTER Language) The pointer to an XML document. It enables internal structures to be referenced rather than just the entire page. It was later folded into the Xpath language. See XSL.

While a DTD uses a hierarchical structure to identify the different elements by relation to each other, these elements that are coded in XML can then be extracted outside the context of the DTD with the use of XLink and XPointer, other tools in the XML family of object-oriented languages.
XLink allows knowledge managers to link to a database that contains a relevant kind of information, and XPointer identifies and extracts the specific element or piece of data within the database to which they are linked.
