A refractory that is composed principally of silica and reacts at high temperatures with bases such as lime, alkalies, and basic oxides.

Silica is an acid refractory and demands an acid (high silica) slag.
For example, if a silica or alumina acid refractory is used, the charge materials must be low in phosphorus and sulfur, because neither refractory will react with and remove these two elements.
