A differential stain used in identifying species of Mycobacterium and one species of Nocardia.

Acid-fast stains give positive results in less than 25% of cases and do not correlate with the severity of the infection.
Both acidfast bacilli (AFB) and Fite's acid-fast stains (Figure 2(c)) showed bacilli in the dermis, consistent with a mycobacterial infection.
