Acid-fast stains give positive results in less than 25% of cases and do not correlate with the severity of the infection.
Both acidfast bacilli (AFB) and Fite's
acid-fast stains (Figure 2(c)) showed bacilli in the dermis, consistent with a mycobacterial infection.
A Fite
acid-fast stain was also negative for mycobacteria in the lung and liver granuloma samples, and the bacteria in the facial granuloma were not acid-fast.
A modified
acid-fast stain is performed to identify parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Isospora, causing chronic diarrhoea in immunocompromised patients.
The abscess exudates were negative on Gram stain, culture, and
