HDL and LDL cholesterol are depressed during sepsis as part of a cytokine-mediated
acute-phase reaction (2).
Indications of an
acute-phase reaction at the initial stages of infection were not detected.
Some proteins (alpha 1 -antitrypsin, alpha 1-acid glycoprotein, haptoglobin, ceruloplasmin, C4, C3 and C-reactive protein) will increase in response to an
acute-phase reaction and are known as positive acute- phase proteins.
Another
acute-phase reaction, elevated levels of C-reactive protein, may occur.
Under stable conditions, CRP concentrations reflect inflammation in the vasculature but are boosted in the acute phase of NSTEACS due to the
acute-phase reaction resulting from myocardial necrosis.
The hyperferritinemia in AOSD may not simply be secondary to the disease process as part of an
acute-phase reaction, but could be causative in the condition, maybe involving iron-mediated oxidative damage or even a mutated form of ferritin.
