An electronic component that can be placed on a printed circuit board already installed in a computer to enhance the computer's capability.

(1) A hardware module or printed circuit board that adds functionality to an existing electronic device. It is designed to plug into a socket on the unit.

(2) Software that adds functionality to an existing application. Also called "add-on." See plug-in.
