Nasiriyah, al-

 

(also al-Nasiriya), a city in southeastern Iraq, on the Euphrates River. Capital of the muhafaza (province) of Dhi Qar. Population, 65,000 (1970). Al-Nasiriyah is the commercial center of an irrigated farming region that grows date palms, cotton, rice, and grain crops. There is also livestock raising in the region. Various kinds of handicrafts are produced in the city.
