Commercially,
alginic acid is harvested from different brown seaweeds e.g.
Lim, "Development of
alginic acid hydrolysate as a natural food preservative for fish-paste products," Korean Journal of Food Science and Technology, vol.
(2005) used wheat bran as the supporting medium for the production of
alginic acid in solid state fermentation.
The large quantities polysaccharides present in brown seaweed exist in structural carbohydrates including
alginic acid, fucoidan and laminaran, and consists of heteropolysaccharides such as D-mannuronic acid and its isomer of L-guluronic acid, which account for most of the cell walls of Phaeophyceae, including brown seaweed (Beresford et al., 2000; Klinkenberg et al., 2001).
This is a huge quantity which can be utilize to convert into valuable product like sodium alginate or
Alginic Acid.
Salts of
alginic acid are soluble in water with alkali metals, and form highly viscous solutions.

alginic acid, locust bean gum and citrus pectin on viscosity and in vitro digestibility of casein.

Nanosheets are a multilayer construction of antibacterial chitosan and
alginic acid, and by applying them to damaged pleura or digestive tract perforation and damaged areas of the arachnoid membrane, they function as an effective tissue seal.
Another type of antacid contains alginate or
alginic acid (such as Gaviscon).
Alginic acid is a family of linear copolymers of 1,4-linked b-Dmannuronic acid (M) and a-L-guluronic acid (G).
