The lighter highland rocks are calcium-rich, metal-poor
anorthosites, the original lunar crust.

anorthosite complex and associated meta-volcanic rocks, SW Greenland: evidence for a magmatic origin.
The new analysis of ferroan
anorthosite (FAN) moonrock samples is published today in the journal Nature.
(165) Data from the Orbiter showed that the lunar highlands have more variation in their chemical composition than previously thought, and detected minerals richer in sodium than the typical
anorthosite crust.

Several regions of the world with similar rapakivi-like granites have formed during crustal extension where crustal rocks are believed to have been mixed with magma from below, resulting in the formation of
anorthosite and granite (Lyckberg, 2009).
Just like the rocks on Earth, Moon's have lots of basalt and olivine, pyroxene, and mafic breccias, along with plagioclase feldspar, also known as
anorthosite. The crew of Apollo 11 even found an entirely new mineral at Tranquility Base during their 1969 visit - dubbed armalcolite in honor of astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins.
The use of this technology has been assessed with two minerals,
anorthosite (a calcium alumino-silicate) and jotunite (an iron-rich basalt).
