In applications such as highly loaded EPDM roofing where one could utilize antimony oxide, chlorinated paraffins, zinc borate and fillers to aid in developing a compound that passes stringent flame retardant requirements.
In addition to eliminating antimony oxide, the new catalyst offers a range of other benefits.
In addition to eliminating antimony oxide, the new catalyst is said to offer high polymer thermal stability, improved brightness and clarity owing to lower impurity content, a significant net reduction in the overall process energy required to produce plastic packaging and lighter bottles without compromising fR on bottle strength.
Hexabromocycododecene has already been removed from the market, and decabromodiphenyloxide (used in conjunction with antimony oxide) will be eliminated in coming years.
Some specific paper topics include atomic layer deposition f antimony oxide on hydrogen-terminated silicon substrates, dopant and carrier concentration profiling with atomic resolution by scanning tunneling microscopy, fabrication of suspended Ge-rich nanowires, photoluminescence study of ion implanted silicon after rapid thermal annealing, and hafnium oxide etching using hydrogen chloride gas.
He says most companies use "various types of barrier fabrics" such as cotton treated with boric acid or rayon treated with silica--both relatively benign chemicals--as well as fire-resistant materials such as modacrylic fiber (which contains antimony oxide, a carcinogen) and melamine resin (which contains formaldehyde).
The results of investigation have shown that molibdenum oxide (VI) is more smoke supressant than antimony oxide (III) and melamine in the range of heat exposure under consideration.
This was not an issue until William Shotyk of the University of Heidelberg showed that in those ubiquitous PET water bottles some of the antimony oxide leached from the plastic into the water "Think Before You Drink" (May 2006 ACCN).
